What the homeowner noticed

The existing guttering along the building’s long roofline needed replacing with a new system that would collect rainwater from the roof and direct it to the drainage outlets.

What our inspection found

  • The long roofline meant gutter positioning, support brackets, joints and the connections to the existing drainage all had to be planned before work started.
  • The metal wall cladding, access around the building and the nearby trees also had to be allowed for.

How certain: Assessed on site before work started

Why this solution

Rather than repairing short sections, the scope was a full replacement: remove the existing guttering and the timber it was fixed to, then fit new timber and new Colorbond steel gutters along the required roof edges.

Work completed

  • Removed the existing gutter sections and separated their drainage connections.
  • Replaced the timber along the roof edge.
  • Prepared the roof edge and positioned brackets to support the new gutters.
  • Installed new Colorbond steel guttering along the required roof edges, set to fall towards the drainage outlets.
  • Connected the new gutters to the drainage outlets.
  • Cleared installation debris from the work area.
  1. Removing the old gutters

The existing gutter sections were detached from their supports and their drainage connections separated, taking care not to disturb the roofing and wall cladding along the long roof edge.

  2. Replacing the timber and preparing the roof edge

With the old gutters off, the timber along the roof edge was replaced to give the new gutters a sound mounting surface, and the brackets were positioned so the gutter would be properly supported and fall towards the outlets along the full run.

  3. Installing the new Colorbond gutters

New Colorbond steel gutter sections were fitted along the roof edge, with attention to alignment under the roof edge, bracket support, fall, joints and the connections to the drainage outlets.

  4. Final checks

The finished gutters were checked before handover and the work area cleared.

  • Clear leaves from the gutters and outlets regularly, more often after windy weather.
  • Check joints and outlets periodically so small problems are caught early.
